Cosmetics are not a modern invention. Humans have used various substances to alter their appearance or accentuate their features for at least 10,000 years, and possibly a lot longer. Everyday products such as shampoos, cleaning products and deodorants all contain fragrances and perfumes. Developing these fragrances is the work of organic chemists, who craft complex mixtures of organic molecules to achieve the desired scents. Cosmetics are in use all over the world since thousands of years. In fact it is growing because of the number of body and beauty pageants being organised at national and international levels, the world over. This growing interest in the use of cosmetics has created a need for scientific study of this subject to facilitate a proper evaluation of all beauty products. Prompted by this awareness and the need to have safe product, the educationists of pharmacy have introduced this part of pharmaceutical technology as one of the subjects for study. Cosmetic products that make an additional therapeutic claim (such as moisturisers that also lighten the skin) are regulated by a different organisation?the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).
