Coordination Chemistry and its Applications

The study of lanthanides and actinides has been covered extensively. General characteristics, physical and chemical properties. General and specific methods of preparation, physical and chemical properties of each element has been discussed at length. Group wise study of elements in d-block series. Coordination chemistry emerged from the work of Alfred Werner, a Swiss chemist who examined different compounds composed of cobalt(III) chloride and ammonia. Upon the addition of hydrochloric acid, Werner observed that ammonia could not be completely removed. He then proposed that the ammonia must be bound more tightly to the central cobalt ion. The bonding in the simple compounds of the transition elements ranges from ionic to covalent. In their lower oxidation states, the transition elements form ionic compounds; in their higher oxidation states, they form covalent compounds or polyatomic ions. The variation in oxidation states exhibited by the transition elements gives these compounds a metal-based, oxidation-reduction chemistry. This book deals with various concepts of coordination chemistry. This text also aims to provide the reader with sufficient details of various concepts to encourage further study and exploration in coordination chemistry. IUPAC system of nomenclature is used throughout the text.
